Isabel BOTELHO LEAL
Secretary of State for Culture
Isabel Botelho Leal was born in Porto in 1967.
She holds a Master’s Degree in International Relations by the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University, Massachusetts (1994), and a Degree in the same area by the College of William and Mary, Virginia (1990), both in the United States of America.
Before taking office in the Portuguese Government in November 2015, Isabel Botelho Leal was since 2013 Head of Division of International Relations at the Portuguese Parliament. She started her career as a Parliamentary Advisor for International Affairs in the Portuguese Parliament in 2000 and, shortly after that she was part of a Bilateral Cooperation Mission of the Portuguese Parliament to East Timor to assist the National Council and Constitutive Assembly between 2001 and 2002. Botelho Leal was twice Political Advisor to the Mission of Portugal in the United Nations, in New York, between 2003 and 2008. In 2006, she joined the cabinet of the UN High Representative to the Elections in Ivory Coast, based in Abidjan.
