Mayor of Bordeaux, President of Bordeaux Métropole, former Prime Minister
Mayor of Bordeaux and President of Bordeaux Métropole, Alain Juppé has held the highest positions in the service of the French Republic (Prime Minister from 1995 to 1997, Minister for the Budget from 1986 to 1988, Minister of Defensein 2011, Minister for Foreign Affairs in 1993,and from 2011 to 2012) without ever turning away from his city, Bordeaux.
Born 15 August 1945 in Mont de Marsan, married with Isabelle and the father of 3 children, froma humble background (the son of Robert Juppé, a farm operator, and Marie Darroze, from a family of the Landes), he entered the Ecole normale supérieure in 1964. The Agrégation de lettres classiques (1967) and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (1968) led him to the Ecole Nationale d’Administration from 1970 to 1972, after performing military service from 1969 to 1970. In 1972, he started at the Inspection générale des finances (French public body for policy analysis).
As Mayor of Bordeaux since 1995, Alain Juppé wants to make Bordeaux a large European metropolis with improved infrastructures and an economy focused on the future, daring modernity while preserving its authenticity and historical heritage (the city has been since 2007 the largest urban complexlisted as UNESCO World Heritage).
Alain Juppé is Grand Cross of the National Order of Merit and Grand Officer of the French Legion of Honor.
